Mideast Restaurant Pleases in Lowell
If mideast politics had anything to do with food, the conflict would end as soon as all hostile parties tasted the amazing food at Babylon Restaurant. On this opening day guests were served literally the best humus I’ve ever tasted with pita bread and a salad, similar to an Israeli salad, only with lettuce included with the cucumbers, tomatoes and onions in a light vinaigrette. This was followed by a heaping plate of delicious jasmine rice with chicken, succulent stuffed peppers, the most delicious stuffed grape leaves I’ve ever had, falafel, cooked so that they’re still soft inside and very tasty, lamb, and I’m in such a food stupor, I can’t remember what else. While I was considering the possibility of buying some pants with an elastic waist, we were served fresh baklavah, dripping with honey with mint tea in elegant glass cups.
The decor is a combo of contemporary colors with a cool retro diner look, but softened with some tasteful Mideast pots on the shelves. The help was friendly and everyone smiled as children, some just learning English, ran around and mothers with head scarves held their new born babies, bonafide US citizens.
This restaurant not only has delicious food, but warmth that can melt prejudices. I loved being there and since my chances of experiencing a restaurant in Iraq are slim, I liked the opportunity of trying one is right on Merrimack Street in Lowell.
